We went out last night around midnight and drove to Moraine Park to watch the Persoid Meteor Shower. We didn’t see many meteors but the star gazing was wonderful. The Milky Way was so pretty and the stars felt like they were down around my ears. We stayed out for about 30 minutes and then came back to our cabin. It was worth the trip even without a great meteor shower display.
I was up at 4:00 am so went out on the deck to see what I could see. I saw one meteor. Not sure if we missed the good ones or if there wasn’t a great display this year. Some years are better than others.
I went down this morning and folded towels for an hour and half while Jim slept in. The volunteer I was working with took me back into the laundry room when I asked him if we were almost caught up. There must be 200 plus bags of towels waiting to be folded. Oh my! One of the laundry managers came by and we got into a discussion. Evidently there was a large group of over 1,000 people on campus the end of July and the laundry has been behind ever since. They are running short staffed too. She told me they have volunteer positions year round if I was interested.
Jim and I are talking about volunteering for next summer. We might see if we can come this fall for two weeks and see what it would be like. We will see how the COVID situation develops. Guess there was a youth on campus that tested positive and lots of families are having to quarantine as well as some staff. Events are starting to be cancelled on campus as a result.
I was grateful the Emporia school board did the right thing and mandated mask wearing for Emporia schools. They are not allowed to offer remote learning this year due to our crazy state legislature. I wonder how many school kids will have to die before they wise up and change their minds. I was not surprised to see many angry parents upset with the school board at their decision. Emporia voted for Trump in 2020 so red minds rule here. Sure makes me wonder when this will all end with so many vaccine hesitant.
After stopping for gas and some batteries, Jim I and drove up Fall River Road early afternoon. Unfortunately Jim had to follow a car all the way up that went 5 – 8 MPH. That made it a frustrating drive up for Jim. You would think the driver would get the hint and pull over and let others pass when the line behind them gets long but this driver didn’t get it. The speed limit is 15 so it made for a long trip up today. There is no way to pass a pokey driver.
We went in the gift shop at the top but didn’t buy anything. It was very windy at the top today. The temperature dropped from 82 to 59. Came down Trail Ridge Road and then went into Estes Park and walked downtown. Ended up getting two puzzles and some kitchen utensils. Downtown was busy but not overly crowded. We wore our masks. Saw others wearing theirs too but most did not.
Came home and have been relaxing for a bit. I laid down for a bit but couldn’t fall asleep. Not sure what we are having for dinner as I didn’t plan anything. I have some bacon and eggs I can fix if nothing else comes to mind. We have some leftover green chicken and some chili we can eat. We won’t starve.
I didn’t get a pass for tomorrow so will hang around here for the day. We can walk to Moraine Park if we get the urge to take a hike. I am a bit sore today from yesterday’s hike so we didn’t hike today. We might go take a hike after a bit around campus.
I’ll probably go fold towels again in the morning. I need to do our laundry either tomorrow or Saturday so it is done up before the son’s arrive Sunday. Folding towels makes the morning go by quickly and the help is very appreciated. I feel better knowing I did something productive at the end of the day.
We also need to clean the cabin either tomorrow or Saturday to get it ready for our guests. We will need to go buy some groceries too. Can’t decide what to fix and need to make a list before we buy groceries. Not sure we can get by not cooking with the son’s here.
I called the company that did the repair to my backyard drainage system this morning. They hadn’t cashed the check that I mailed August 1. Turns out they have a PO Box and I mailed it to their physical address and they haven’t received it yet. I mailed another check to them today. I trust they will get this one. I’m glad I called. They deserve to be paid promptly.
I sent an email to the Gastrointestinal doctor I saw last year. I want them to check me over and see if I have something else besides C-Diff going on. They got back to me today and gave me an appointment for September 9. The Infectious Disease Doctor told me she thinks I may have IBS but she doesn’t diagnosis that.
Hard to think that a week from tomorrow we will be headed back to KS. Both Jim and I got a bit homesick last night looking at the stars. We have a wonderful view of the stars every night off our back deck. I kinda miss that view as well as the chickens, dogs and cats.
Grateful for a safe trip up Fall River road and home again, grateful to have been in service today for a bit of time, and grateful for the beauty of the night sky last night.
