First day of doing taxes in Oklahoma is in the bag. It was an interesting day. Met some wonderful people and had fun working with my co-volunteers. Did eight returns. The first one took three hours and stumped the long-term volunteers. I had another one that took three people to figure out too.
Their system of finding someone to review seems to work. I didn’t like having nothing to do while mine were being reviewed although most of the time I could find someone to review during that time. Felt a bit like a round robin of sort and a bit chaotic but it works.
We had a hall full of people this morning waiting to get their taxes done. It was much slower this afternoon.
I like the way we can help each other out. There seems to be different subject matter experts and we can call on others when we have a question. There is no judgment when a reviewer finds a mistake. The person that imputed the information just gets told what the reviewer found and if they didn’t understand how to do something it gets explained. The newest people had an experienced person with them for most of the day. That was nice!
I go back tomorrow from 12:30 – 4:30. Wednesday got cancelled as the library where we do the taxes had the room booked for someone else, I’m glad it is only two days this week. I have lots of painting I want to do Wednesday.
The plumber came this morning to fix the bathtub drain. In addition to the broken pipe Jim found out his bathtub needs replaced. They are coming back Wednesday to do that. It needs new surround panels too but the only ones available won’t fit. He is going to have to have it tiled instead. Not sure if Jim will try to do that or if he will hire it done.
He got the cabinet above the stove installed today and is finishing getting the microwave hung below the cabinet. Wow! The kitchen is really looking different. I hope to get the painting on the outside of the cabinets done on Wednesday. Jim needs to finish stripping the doors and then he needs to make some more doors.
After I get the cabinets painted I will start painting the kitchen walls. We will have to pick a paint color for the lower part of the wall. Some of the wall will need some crack repair done before I can paint.
It is exciting to see the kitchen get redone. Wish the floor guy could come sooner than three months but guess he will get here when he can get here.
Once we get the kitchen as far as we can get it we need to get back out to the back room and get insulation and sheet rock hung. Still need to sand the floor and stain it. Jim will also need to build some trim around the windows.
We are making lots of progress though! Still not thinking we will have the inside of the house done by April but we will get more done than I had thought we might.
It was much colder this afternoon than when I went into the library this morning at 9:00. The high tomorrow is only going to be 37 and it was 69 this morning. We are to get snow on Wednesday but by Friday it will warm back up to the 50’s.
I didn’t take a lunch break today and I came home at 4:30 very hungry. I haven’t started dinner yet as Jim wanted to finish installing the microwave before we eat. I have some leftovers to warm up for dinner so when he is ready to eat it won’t take long. I’ll have to put something in the crock pot tomorrow morning before I leave at noon to go do taxes.
The rest of the invitations came in today so we can get those addressed and in the mail this week.
I’m tired tonight. It was fun doing taxes but I feel a bit drained tonight. I should have taken a lunch break and gotten some fresh air. I’ll remember to do that next week. Tomorrow is only a four hour shift so that should be easier and not so draining.
Grateful the first day of taxes is in the books, grateful I only have one more shift to do this week, and grateful for all the progress being made in the kitchen.
