We got up early this morning and had breakfast and then headed for Trail Ridge Road. The line was the longest it has been for us so far. It took almost an hour to get through the line and into the park. The traffic was light once we got into the park.
We had a pass to go to Bear Lake but decided to go up Trail Ridge Road instead. We drove up to the Ute Trail and instead of hiking the Ute Trail we hiked on the opposite side of the road on the tundra. I had forgotten how much more fun it is to hike on the tundra. No path to follow – you get to create your own. We were the only ones on that side of the road so had the whole tundra to ourselves.
We saw a herd of about 20 elk. It was a female herd with some calves although there were a few young bucks in the group. So majestic to see them in their own habitat in the mountains.
We found a small batch of snow. I had Jim take my picture and I sent it to the grandkids. They were surprised you can still find snow this late in the summer.
We got back to the cabin around 1:30. Thomas fixed lunch for us using some leftovers they had brought with them from yesterday.
Jim and I then went to the grocery store after everyone decided on menus for the rest of the week. We had trouble finding Rice Vinegar – asked four different people until we finally found someone that took us to it. Trusting we got everything we needed but the store is still there and open if not.
After we put the groceries away I fixed a Ham and Corn Chowder in the crock pot for dinner. I then laid down for about 30 minutes but couldn’t sleep. The sons are playing miniature golf for a bit. I bet they will enjoy that.
At 5:00 I will try to get us a pass for tomorrow. Sure hope the line to get in isn’t so long tomorrow but guess it will be what it is.
Not sure what they want to do in the park tomorrow – they just asked me to try to get a pass. Jim is hoping for a long hike but not sure all the extra guests have that in mind.
It was a beautiful day here today. It reached the low 80’s down below and was in the lower 60’s up on top. It is to be nice again tomorrow and then rain is coming in for the last two full days we are here. That may change some plans but we don’t have any solid plans so will go with the flow.
Our time here is quickly coming to an end. Friday will be here before I know it. To tell the truth I am ready to go home. The virus spread is continuing to get worse and I will feel safer being at home and staying in. I’m glad we got to come but it will be oh so nice to be home sweet home again.
Grateful for the beautiful hike on the tundra today, grateful I found a snow patch I could put my hands on, and grateful for this time with Jim’s sons.
