Not sure where the day went to today. Haven’t done much but make a batch of cookies and take a nap. It has been so cold I didn’t even do chores – Jim took care of them today. We got 25 eggs today which is amazing as cold as it is.
I worked on the hot line for a bit last night. Took two calls early to help reduce their queue and then, as they were caught up, got off and signed back on later for my shift. Only handled two callers when I signed on the second time. We had to do a rescue for one of them. The supervisor didn’t share much with me so not sure what happened. I signed off after the call as I was drained.
This morning when I signed on so I could review the convo I noticed that after I had closed it the person had texted in they were OK. We hadn’t heard anything from them for 15 minutes when the super told me to close it out. It was a relief to know the texter was OK. Their text must have come in at the same time I hit the close button. Once I hit close convo I can’t reopen it to text. Trust the person is alive and well today.
The super must have seen the comment come in as the rescue was not completed. I wish she had shared that with me last night. I might have slept better.
The hardest part of doing this volunteer job is the never knowing the “rest of the story”. You never know if what they are telling you is true, you never know the other side of the story and you never know what happens to them once you disconnect. Trust becomes a big part of this job – trust that their best and higher interest is what happens. Somedays it is easier to let go of them than others.
I made butter cookies last night using my new cookie press. Jim said they are good. I struggled getting the lid off the thing a couple times. Good thing Jim was around as he had to help me open it up twice. They are fun to make and other than getting the lid off the press worked well.
It never got out of the single digits today and most of the day felt like it was below zero with the wind chill . Snow is to start falling in the morning and snow most of the day tomorrow. The temperatures are going to continue to drop through Tuesday next week and then we will finally start warming back up a bit. It is dangerously cold out there.
Jim put some plastic up over the door to the garage that the dogs use to try to keep some of the cold out. The cats have been coming in at night but the dogs run around like nothing is different. The dogs have been napping under the heat lamps in the garage occasionally. They love cold weather.
The blanket I am knitting on is coming along. I am on the 9th repeat at this point. I will finish it and do one more and then decide if it is long enough. I have enough yarn to do more and I prefer the blanket be too long than too short. I have been watching Home Fires, a PBS series on Amazon Prime while I knit. It makes the knitting go by quickly as I get absorbed in the story line of the series.
I stopped writing for a bit and we delivered the cookies to the grandkids. The forecast for tomorrow is calling for snow and I wanted to get the cookies to them before the roads got bad. The traffic was heavy tonight (at least by Chase County standards) on the highway. Thinking lots of people were trying to get home or errands run before the really bad winter weather arrives tomorrow. I took each of my kids some eggs too. Not sure if they needed them but I needed to get some eggs out of the refrigerator.
No plans for the weekend. I need to bake Jim a batch of Snickerdoodles tomorrow but other than that the only thing I have to do is stay warm and dry. The high tomorrow is going to be 9 and the low is 0. Sunday the high will be 1 with a low of -4. Yuck! February has been a moth of winter weather so far. By next weekend we should finally get above zero again. Bring on Spring.
I’ll probably get on the hot line tonight since I took a nap today. I need to find something to do today so I feel a bit productive. I keep managing to not get much done these days.
Fixed brats for dinner tonight. I picked some up when I got groceries earlier this week and needed to use them up. They fix up quick and easy in the George Forman grill. May make soup of some kind tomorrow since it is to be so cold. Soup will taste good on a cold day like tomorrow is to be.
Just made myself a note to remind myself to give myself my cholesterol shots before I go to bed tonight. I usually do them during the day but since I need to take Benadryl with them decided to do them at bed time as Benadryl can knock me out.
Looking forward to getting our second vaccines next Friday. Not looking forward to the reaction for the first two or three days afterwards but it will be worth it to be protected. By the time our wedding anniversary rolls around March 19 we should be good to go.
Grateful to find out the texter was OK, grateful the cookies got delivered today, and grateful we will be able to stay home where it is nice and warm for the next couple of days.
